What Functions Should the Police Perform?
The 2019 Wayne County 911 Center Annual Report documented that 84% of the calls received by the 911 Center were referred to police agencies to respond.
Below are the categories the 911 Center received calls for response and self-initiated calls for service by police agencies countywide by all police agencies (village, town, Sheriff’s Office and State Police).

The Top 10 Calls for Service that Wayne County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to or self-initiated in August 2020:
As a community, do we want police officers to respond to mental health calls; substance abuse / overdose calls; calls regarding homeless persons and other non-criminal calls or are other community resources better equipped to handle these calls.
With limited 24/7 resources in Wayne County, deputy sheriffs and other police agencies respond to many of the non-criminal calls to evaluate and refer the call to the governmental /community agency of record to best handle the call as that agency deems appropriate.
This is a discussion that will take place at future community engagement listening sessions to be scheduled at a later date.
